Individual Therapy

“I am defeated, and I just don’t know what to do about it all.”

Melissa was an extremely successful 30-something who longed for a baby! Like most women of our time believed she needed to do it all and do it all well.

She was married to her husband for three years when they began to try to get pregnant.

They tried and tried and tried.

The more they tired the worse things between them got and the more anxious and withdrawn Melissa became.

She felt like her body had betrayed her and worse yet she felt unwanted by her husband.
A private, proud woman she felt like she had no one to turn to.

The incessant demands we put on ourselves can be paralyzing.

Just like Melissa we can be left feeling overwhelmed, confused and undone.
Direction, support and space to talk through what was happening enabled Melissa to explore her options.

First things first!

Melissa, driven to succeed, to be more, do more and have more, responded to her experience in the same way she responded to life up to that point with much success.

She kept doing harder, longer, stronger and more perfectly than ever before and it did not work, hoping against hope to create the life she had dreamt of as a kid.

Henry was a lot like Melissa except he had it all.

The perfect wife, 2.5 kids who made straight A’s, had perfect teeth and were headed to Ivy League schools.

He had the perfect job where he was making terrific money that afforded all these amazing things.

And he felt empty inside.

He had these speeches he would give himself in the middle of the night when he would wake up. “Get it together! Stop your whining! What the hell is wrong with you?”

He didn’t understand what was happening, “Nothing I say or do is working! My wife knows something is wrong no matter how hard I try to reassure her that everything is fine. My kids know something is up but would never say a word. They tip toe around me.”

Melissa and Henry needed to stop doing as soon as they got in to my office.

They needed to practice being immediately!

They needed a way out of fight, flight or freeze mode, STAT!

Understanding where you come from, how you got here and where you are going sounds like a tall order.
Unpacking all this in a way that allowed Melissa and Henry to name what was most important to them provided them with the opportunity to see what changes they wanted to make.

Shifting the chatter in their brains allowed them to get a balanced perspective on their strengths and areas that needed support.

Naming their deepest held desires and figuring out how to talk about them with the most important people in their lives was practiced first in my office and then practiced again in their daily lives.

You do not need to figure it out all on your own!

The skills I used to help Melissa, Henry, and countless others, stem from evidenced based practice and knowledge rooted in experience and faith in people’s ability to change.

I was able to clarify for Melissa and Henry the reality of their individual situations, support their naming of their desires and identify changes necessary to resolve issues they had control over or what they needed to let go of in order to have the life they wanted.

You may be having some of the same struggles they did.

Let’s get started so you can experience the relief and joy Melissa and Henry did!
